This for all PubCon fans and definitely for Internet Marketers who care for what industry leaders say with experience. Pubcon is considered to be the biggest event in search marketing with all the biggies participating and sharing insights which otherwise is difficult to acquire.

Kevin Gibbons from Seoptimise has collated some of the most valuable takeaways which I find very useful and definitely worth a space on my blog.

General SEO Trends
1) #7 ranking for a long-tail term can get as much traffic as #2 for head-of-tail! Due to CTR behaviour @ArnieK
2) 42% of people click #1 result for head-tail terms – 25% 1st result for long-tail, but much more traffic spread across rest of SERPs
3) Wow! Sites get a higher CTR being in the #7 position for a long-tail keyword than a #2 position for a head term.
4) +1 annotated URLs receive 20% higher CTR – @robgarner
5) Google’s in big trouble right now according to @leolaporte – next big thing isn’t search!
6) Via @leolaporte – A single engaged viewer is worth at least 10 loosely engaged viewer. (Unless they’re a stalker!)
7) Build targeted niche audience in order to maximise advertiser revenue, instead of short-term trick tactics @leolaporte

On-site Optimisation
8)Provide consistent geo signals in titles, URL, breadcrumbs, content. etc. via @AlanBleiweiss
9) Worst #SEO thing to do: pick obvious phrases & rank below the 7pack -@GregBoser
10) Slightly black-hat tip from @graywolf his “friend” forges updated blog publish date to increase SERP CTRs
11) Exact match title tags used to work better, now natural language titles performing much better @uberjill

Technical SEO
12) Robots exclusion preferred option for blocking indexing – saves Google load because they don’t need to visit page @gregboser
13) Great free tool for creating micro formats from @RavenTools http://t.co/waMQWXi0
14) Research shows that a penalized domain with 301 redirects to a new domain will pass the penalty to the new domain
15) There’s an exponential decline in PageRank passed as the number of 301 redirects increase.
16) If you haven’t played with codecademy.com then your missing out… Try it!
17) Don’t 301 redirect throwaway blog content – SE’s are getting smarter. Update content to make more commercial instead @graywolf
18) A special webmaster video for : How does Google determine page speed? http://t.co/f2a1T6Zy

SEO Strategy
19) Client focuses; don’t be afraid to go rogue, proof-of-concept is key, embrace open graph & individual employee identities @GregBoser
20) Key agency focuses; learn to say no, autonomous solutions & new products/services to solve common problems @GregBoser
21) Clients convinced they need more links to get rankings – quite often they need less. Tidying profile having big impact @GregBoser
22) Ask your client; do you think you deserve to rank in top 3 for priority keyword? If not, why not? @bruceclay
23) “Get your SEO included in the specification team” via @ashnallawalla
24) Great tip by @sspencer – if you see indented listing, add num=9 to URL – if 2nd listing removed, true position = 10
25) Ambiguity is a problem for SEO – Google need behavioural targeting to find personalised user intent behind query @bruceclay
26) “if you as a parent can say to a child go to a site & learn from it, then you have a quality site” Amit Singhal, Google
27) 2012 predictions: personalisation to determine rankings, local PPC & evolution of more integrated internet marketing @bruceclay
28) Web is only place where the small businesses can move faster than big guys – eg Zappos were small & achieved huge success @mattcutts

Google Webmaster Tools/Algorithm
29) Google suggested searches can be quite different from Geo to Geo, pay attention & find opportunities -@GregBoser
30) “link:http://t.co/zfAOUcUg inurl:twitter” query shows that Google are indexing Twitter links! @sspencer
31) #pubcon poll: Would you rather get more search queries in GMT (40%) or more history (60%) @mattcutts
32) Make sure you subscribe to Google Webmaster blog, Inside Search & Webmaster Video channel @mattcutts
33) Signup for GWT, setup email alerts, setup “fat pings” when publishing, use http://t.co/PmmNZKbT @mattcutts
34) Google looking to provide more communication updates – eg GWT alert on out-of-date WordPress @mattcutts
35) Got a page topped with ads? google’s evaluating algo changes to penalize these says @mattcutts
36) Google currently looking into figuring out what content is above the fold as part of algorithm @mattcutts
37) Google giving communication big push in 2011 – more feedback via GWT over reconsideration requests etc @mattcutts
38) SEO=Coaching – only constant in search is change, you don’t want to go where SEs are – go where they’re going to be! @mattcutts

Google Panda
39) There’s no quick fix to panda – quite often you need to change business model & accept you’ll never get back to peak @GregBoser
40) Pre-panda strategy; bigger the net, the more fish you catch. Post-panda; can’t get away with overloading index @GregBoser
41) Weak UGC – e.g. spun articles & 1000′s of pages of crap content is affecting overall domain performance in Google @gregboser
42) Panda update = Google far more concerned with overall site quality vs page quality @gregboser
43) Google rates content on how helpful it is to users – bounce rate/usage data very important post-panda @sspencer
44) Low quality content is typically; aggregated, paraphrased, generic, duplicated – lacks; expertise, research, citations @beussery
45) G panda update biased by quality of links. @bruceclay has seen + impact follow link pruning to reduce low quality

Social Search
46) If video is part of your strategy – make sure you use keywords when you speak! = getting found via transcript search @bruceclay
47) Correlation is important, Google don’t tell us the answers. Facebook shares currently top human engagement factor @GregBoser
48) Wikipedia & YouTube nofollow external links, but not internal links. So get content hosted on there ranking instead @sspencer
49) “the name of the writer can be used to influence the ranking of web search results” v important quote from Google about authors
50) Video & image search is much better on Bing than Google @GregBoser
51) Important social authority tip: meet people in real life! Make connection between on&offline to improve likelihood of sharing
52) What does google look for in social authority? Number of replies/comments, automation vs manual, relevancy & association with groups
53) According to keynote SEO may be dead in 6 months, so let’s talk about social! @johnwellis

Google SSL
54) Number of users with SSL is single-digit percentage in aggregate. Tech sites will be higher due to type of users @mattcutts
55) Main argument by @mattcutts was it’s what users want, total SSL no is <10% & you can get keyword data from GWT for top 1000 kws
56) 96% of website’s get full keyword query data from 1,000 term limit in GWT @mattcutts
57) PPC gets data, organic doesn’t. Advertisers get the data b/c they can’t do negative KWs and make useful.
58) Google unlikely to back down on SSL, users are happy with it because of privacy issues @mattcutts
59) 96% of sites get ALL keyword data from GWT (1000 KWs) – getting around SSL not provided GA report @mattcutts

2 billion Internet users worldwide
Internet accounts for 3.4% of GDP in 13 countries
21% of GDP growth in the last 5 years in mature country
and much more…

Isn’t that interesting to read. We all are present to the influence of internet in today’s world, but it’s direct impact on gdp, we might not have thought of any number around this.
McKinsey Global Institute has recently released its new report around “Internet matters: The Net’s sweeping impact on growth, jobs, and prosperity“.

Lots of data around why and how much is the impact of internet on global economy and among the various findings, one of the interesting insight is that, United States, even after being the largets player in the global Internet supply ecosystem, capturing more than 30 % of global Internet revenues and more than 40% of net income, has only 3.2% influence in its GDP.

There is more to what you can read through. For full report, you should visit their website.

It is very insightful.

Cheers,

This is amazing, they serve more than double the number of ads Yahoo display serves.

Definitely, share of ad spends is finding a strong contender to the set biggieess, and it only tell me that search trends are changing, behavior is evolving and so will be the response.

Something that facebook is able to do that not many other online players are still struggling towards, is getting the big offline ad spenders to have facebook in their media kit. This is change, change that is driven by people, the true social impact.

You can get more details of the comscore report here

One man sits on a fast, his intentions may be good. Millions find a medium to express their anger towards the system. It is not about one government, not about one politician, it is about communicating, if I am not reacting does not mean I cannot do anything. It is like, only because I did not utter a word does not mean you are right, what you said is true. This expression of anger by individuals is more intense than what happened after 26/11, Mumbai attack. No political party can try taking advantage of this situation. If this was against congress then why did bjp or bsp or left parties did not make a statement in public. All are one when it comes to corruption, taking citizens for granted. PM saying am not aware of corruption, Advani saying not everything from wikileaks is true, bjp president saying what karnataka cm did is morally wrong, but under his rights. Funny, seems these guys know for sure that citizens are only tools for acquiring votes and then it is all about who is making more money than the other. Hahahha, we sure are tools, infact toys, flows with what we see, and do not forget we see what these media guys show us and it is not so indifferent between the way politicians and media persons are. Both knows that they have power and power is for making money, no matter it only requires some food to fill the stomach but bank can accomodate any amount of money. If Indian banks cannot provide security to black money then there are banks in foreign countries that has better security systems to satisfy these powerful hungry non-humans.
There was anice liner in the movie Spiderman “with power comes responsibilities” but seems our leaders and media guys reads this as “with power comes money”
Well, it is just about changing the education books that these guys have read, maybe that was the reason why Sibal was asked to talk to Anna Hazare and team and promise to look into this chapter again. But who knows what will change … Yes, something will … And we will continue living the way we are.

Cheers

My support to the hunger strike, non-violence (Mahatma Gandhi) movement:

Things to know about Anna Hazare and Lok Pal Bill

1.Who is Anna Hazare?
An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2.What’s so special about him?
He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3.This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills. In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4.This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5.He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?
He is advocating for a Bil, The Lok Pal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

7. It’s an entirely new thing right..?
In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

8. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?
The first thing he is asking for is: the govt should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.
Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the LOK PAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation.Bcz u cant trust the govt entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

9.What will happen when this bill is passed?
A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished…

Spread the word pls!

Blog your support

Am working for an equity research firm and there is going to be a websummit around Outlook 2011 from the srtock and commodity market perspective. Thought, let me as well list down few developments in the internet space that I foresee for 2011. So here I go:

1) Facebook will increase its dominance as most visited site
2) Facebook’s revenues will boost +2 fold
3) Google will struggle to find an alternative stable revenue medium other than adwords
4) Twitter’s roll in news media will increase
5) Ctr for tweets and facebook links will increase on search platforms
6) Bing will come up with more user friendly features in its search results
7) Bing search market share will increase big time
Google will face 3 fold problems, loosing share to bing, increasing dominance and ad spends on facebook and more searches happening on twitter
9) Overall internet spending will increase to at-least 140% outside of US and UK
10) Brand advertisers will find more value online and so will their spends be
11) Usage of internet search and browsing will increase on mobile.
12) Mobile ad revenue will remain more or less unchanged with ad ctr on mobile not showing promising numbers
13) Video consumption online will increase in Asian continent
14) Entertainment and FMCG industry spends online will increase at-least 200% to what they had in 2010 (India)

Guys, all of the above are pure interpretation of my way of observing the industry. Hope 2011 turns rocking for everyone.

Cheers
Pankaj

Everyone is talking about social media everywhere. No one is talking about a new added space available in a free mail service but yes, has a full page about the new social element added into it.
I was wondering what could be the impact of social media and to which extent it will reach. It is like a vegetable vendor down my building carrying 2 mobile phone. When mobile was launched, never in my dreams I wondered this could happen.
Today, I got a shock of my life when I found one of my aunt’s profile in facebook. A complete non-techie person that she is, honestly, this again was something I could never dream of.
Truly social media is turing out to be bigger than anyone expected. Ask Google, ask msn. Never would have Google wondered, that while they were trying to counter the new developments of bing, platforms like twitter and facebook will create a whole new world within their dominating domain.
This reminds me of a discussion with one of my x-reporting head on the evolving impact of these social platforms. We, the users are moving from a blind world of results to a trusted world of our own social circle. This will change big time, the way we absorb things online, will change the way we search, will change the way we surf.
No matter, everyone is bold to dive into an unknown territory for want of information, having said that, we all end up going the trusted route from there on.
That to me is the basic difference between a search engine and social platform.
What this platforms have allowed us to do is expand our network from the people we know to once we would like to know.
This again brings me to one of the articles I was reading today on the importance of your profile page on a social platform. Be it the info you have shared to your image showcased.
That says and influences a lot to users who wish to connect, learn and share moments with you.
Train moving faster than expected, maybe because am busy writing this. So off I go for the day.

Cheers
Pankaj
